By being aware of our history in the battlefields and cemeteries of Northern Europe (and elsewhere), we can help later generations to understand the terrible price war demands. And be part of helping to ensure such slaughter is prevented.
British and Commonwealth Cemeteries are designed to resemble an English country garden and all national cemeteries reflect something of the character of the nation represented. 
Almost everyone who has travelled to battlefield memorial sites, such as Vimy Ridge in France, comments on how beautiful the locations are now. 
Many have found their visits to be voyages of discovery and frequently, veterans have been able to lay their terrible memories to rest.  For others, such as relatives and friends, it is both touching and enriching and can bring healing of broken memories and damaged feelings.
